A few kilometres from Rome there are towns whose origins are still shrouded in mystery, their imposing size posing continuous questions about their creators. We are talking about Alatri, Anagni, Arpino, Atina, Ferentino: the five Saturnian cities whose colossal walls are made up of enormous megalithic  blocks of stone perfectly set, without the aid of any mortar or cement. A little further on is Cori, also surrounded by cyclopean walls and shrouded in mystery. The foundation of these centers is lost in the mists of time, still today in fact we are unable to estimate it, but the legend has largely made up for scientific knowledge. It is said that they were erected by the god Saturn himself during the golden age (aurea aetas), who was commemorated and whose return was invoked during the celebrations – the saturnalia – in honor of the divinity. Their uniqueness according to many scholars lies in their position, since they would accurately replicate  the central ring of the constellation of Gemini. Classical archeology suggests that the Pelasgians – pre-Hellenic populations who colonized the area – had built their strongholds there. In support of this thesis is the strong similarity between the architectural layout used here and that of the Mycenaean cities of ancient Greece. The area is well known  for its delicious food and the wine. In every corner you will taste fresh vegetables and products from the garden full of flavour. White wines are made from Bombino, Bellone, Trebbiano vines. As for red wines the most famous ones are made with Nero Buono di Cori grapes.

Day 1

  • Meeting in Rome and transfer to Anagni.
  • Arrival at the accomodation and visit to the megalithic walls.
  • Lunch and visit to the cathedral of Anagni. Its cript considered the Sistine chapel of the Middle Ages and to the historical center.
  • Introductory lesson with our professional sommelier (the history of wine and its cultural importance, the main vines of Lazio, wine cultivation techniques, the use of specific glasses, tasting of three wines).
  • Dinner in one of our recommended restaurants.

Day 2

  • Visit to the cyclopean walls of Alatri and Atina.
  • After lunch we move on to Cori and visit  a wine cellar with a wine tasting session.
  • Return to Anagni.
  • Second wine lesson (the aroma of wine, tipical scents of white and red wines, how to use one’s senses again, how to recognize the bouquet).
  • Dinner in one of our recommended restaurant.

Day 3

  • Visit to Arpino, Ferentino. Here there is a pentagonal door, similar to those of Argos and Mycenae, that has an apex in the center. The door is called a sanguinary door, probably due to the transit of those condemned to death.
  • After lunch visit to a wine cellar and guided wine tasting session.
  • End of trip and return to Rome
